What is HSV-2 (HSV-1)?
HSV-2 is a sexually transmitted infection that causes genital herpes. Both HSV-1 and HSV-2 infections are lifelong. An estimated 3.7 billion people under age 50 (67%) have HSV-1 infection globally.

HSV-1 is most contagious during an outbreak of symptomatic oral herpes, but can also be transmitted when no symptoms are felt or visible. People with active symptoms of oral herpes should avoid oral contact with others and sharing objects that have contact with saliva.
Is HSV shedding associated with HIV infection?
HSV shedding is increased among persons with HIV infection ( 502 ). Whereas ART reduces the severity and frequency of symptomatic genital herpes, frequent subclinical shedding still occurs ( 503, 504 ). Clinical manifestations of genital herpes might worsen during immune reconstitution early after initiation of ART.
