Heat Transfer Vinyl or HTV is a vinyl used to decorate apparel, bags, and other soft goods. Unlike adhesive vinyl or sign vinyl, HTV is printed onto an item using heat and pressure.

Is HTV and vinyl the same?

Adhesive Vinyl can come in all kinds of colors and finishes, but it will always have a paper backing and be sticky to the touch when that backing is peeled off. Heat Transfer Vinyl, on the other hand, does not have a paper backing. Instead, HTV, has a clear plastic carrier sheet that covers the top of the vinyl.

Though there are some heat transfer vinyls with a very aggressive adhesive like Stahls’ SuperTEK® line, the only way to really make sure the HTV sticks to a waterproof or water resistant garment is to remove the coating. This is primarily done with DWR’s (durable water repellent).
